British Wheel of Yoga Accreditation: Is It Worth It?

The British Wheel of Yoga (BWY) is the UK's largest yoga organisation. Should your studio require teachers to have it?

What Is the BWY?

The BWY is the Sport England-recognised governing body for yoga in the UK. They've been around since 1965 and offer:

  • Teacher training accreditation (200-hour and 500-hour)
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Insurance (through their partner brokers)
  • Regional groups and networking

The Insurance Discount

Teachers with BWY membership often get cheaper Public Liability insurance (£40-£60/year vs £100-£150 for non-members). As a studio owner, this matters if you require teachers to carry their own insurance.

If you employ teachers directly, your Employers' Liability covers them regardless of BWY membership.

Student Recognition

UK students increasingly ask about qualifications. 'BWY Diploma' is recognised by those who've done research. '200-hour YTT from Costa Rica' sounds nice but might not meet British standards.

For prenatal or therapy yoga, BWY specialist qualifications are the gold standard in the UK.

The Cost Barrier

BWY membership costs teachers £45/year. Training accreditation costs centres £500+ annually. This might exclude:

  • Newly qualified teachers with tight budgets
  • International teachers (IYENGAR, Ashtanga authorised, etc.)
  • Specialists in niche styles (Jivamukti, Forrest, etc.)

Alternatives to BWY

Other recognised UK bodies include:

  • Yoga Alliance Professionals (YAP): More modern, less traditional, popular with vinyasa/power yoga teachers
  • Independent Yoga Network (IYN): Smaller, community-focused
  • REPs (Register of Exercise Professionals): Now part of CIMSPA, more fitness-focused

Studio Policy Recommendations

For general classes: Require any recognised 200-hour certification (BWY, Yoga Alliance, equivalent) plus ongoing CPD.

For specialist classes: Require BWY or equivalent specialist training for pregnancy, therapy, or children's yoga.

For cover/freelance: Accept BWY membership as proof of insurance and professional standards, but don't require it exclusively.

The Quality Control Angle

BWY requires teachers to complete 10 hours CPD annually and adhere to a code of ethics. If you hire BWY-registered teachers, you know they've committed to ongoing learning—not just a one-month intensive in Bali 5 years ago.

This protects your reputation and reduces injury risk.
